Parent-Child Boundary Setting and Personal Safety class for parents and 3rd to 5th Grade children.
Saturday & Sunday, March 1st and 2nd, from 12-2pm at the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor High School Gym.
This workshop is being taught by Heidi Sproull LMSW, and Anika Sproull, LLMSW.
Cost for the two part workshop: $80 per adult/child pair and $40 per additional child or family member. If you want to participate and cannot afford the whole cost, please talk with Heidi about a sliding scale rate.
While no parent wants to consider that their child is vulnerable to abuse and harm, statistics indicate that 1 out of 9 children (rates are higher for girls than boys) are targeted for sexual abuse (RAINN). Children are most vulnerable to abuse perpetrated by someone known to the child. This 4- hour (two sessions) all-gender parent/child boundary setting and personal safety workshop will provide you and your child an opportunity to talk calmly and in a supportive environment with other parents and children about the risk of violence and to learn skills for self defense and getting help.
This workshop will include basic, sensitively presented information about:
Mental preparedness: understanding what “uh oh” feelings are (trusting myself) and knowing I have a right to my own body and that it’s ok to tell adults and older children “NO!"
Verbal assertiveness: Learning what to say and how to say it in order to make ourselves heard.
Physical self defense: We will actively practice simple physical skills and self defense strategies specifically chosen for use by smaller people against a larger, stronger attacker.
Heidi Sproull, LMSW, is a trauma specialized psychotherapist who holds a blackbelt in Jujutsu and a brown belt in Judo and has taught self defense for 30 years. Heidi is a sex educator and the creator and author of INFORMED ADOLESCENCE: Middle School Curriculum with lessons on Teen Resilience, Sexual Health and Boundary Setting & Personal Safety, which will be released by Rowman and Littlefield in March of 2025.
Anika Sproull, LLMSW, is a crisis response social worker with previous experience as a wilderness therapy field guide. She has been instructing self defense for more than a decade and has competitive judo experience. She has developed and teaches a specialized personal safety curriculum for human service workers.
